Dr. Walter J. Sapp

Endowed Scholarship

The family of Dr. Walter J. Sapp, longtime Tuskegee University professor and administrator, established an endowed scholarship in his memory. The scholarship, to benefit graduate students in the University's cell biology department, was initiated with a donation of over $25,000:

"This is a culmination of our family dream for Walter's memorial to have an endowed scholarship fund," said Atty. Ernestine Sapp, wife of Dr. Walter J. Sapp. "We did it very quickly with the help of friends because of his devotion to services at Tuskegee. From a graduate science student at Tuskegee, to tenured professor and various important administrative positions, it was all a labor of love. Our family hopes that people will continue to donate to Tuskegee University in Walter's memory to expand his scholarship."

At the time of establishment in 2010, now former Tuskegee University President, Dr. Benjamin F. Payton, expressed gratitude on behalf of the institution and its students to the Sapp family for their donation:

"Tuskegee is honored that the Sapp family chose to honor Dr. Sapp in such a great way. He was a wonderful asset to this university and beyond," Payton said. "This scholarship fund is sure to aid deserving students in a scientific field that consistently benefits the entire world."

The Sapp family committed to increase this endowment to over $100,000 in five years; a goal completed during the summer of 2015.  Originally, a  scholarship single award of $1,000 will be raised to $5,000 across several winners.  The scholarship will continue to be awarded at the University's annual President's Essay Contest and Awards Ceremony.
